The overwhelming response to my post seeking nature writers and artists on Substack has really been something. Inspired by the outpouring of love and support for all those who create with the natural world in mind, I have put together a new directory of nature-based publications on Substack.
We are closing in on 200 of us here on Substack (!) — and I know there are more, perhaps many more, who’ve not joined us yet. All or very nearly all of the publications listed are in English, for example, and there must be an array of non-English sites that we haven’t reached yet.
I’ll launch it in early May 2024, and I’ll be sure to let you all know when it’s up. In the meantime, it’s in placeholder form until I gather more information from each newsletter and upload it all.
Things to know:
Go ahead and subscribe to the directory if you like; it’s free, and will stay that way.
I’ll send a newsletter in early May letting you know when it’s live.
I don’t plan to send more than one email a month or so from the directory site, so your inbox won’t suffer much. I’ll just send a monthly update with new listings, relevant news, and maybe some ideas to increase visibility for nature work.
More things to know, specifically for the nature writers/artists in the crowd:
If you were already listed in my preliminary nature directory here at Fearless Green, I’ve gone ahead and listed you in the alphabetical directory on the new HOME Nature Directory.
Fill out this quick Google Form if you want me to include more detailed info about your newsletter, list you under specific themes or regions, or link to a specific post.
See just below for a mockup of how your listing might appear, using mine as an example. Depending on your responses to the Google Form, it will appear under your relevant theme(s) and in the directory for your region.
Sample Listing:
It's up to us; an environmental lawyer talks wildlife and forest magic with an occasional digression into rewilding the Earth.
From the author: My post about the tiniest bunny and its struggle to bounce back in the American northwest was one of my favorite pieces to research and write, and readers seemed to enjoy the ride too!
More info about the directory
I am going to list publications both by region and by theme/genre. There will be a basic alphabetical list, too. This should offer more ways for potential readers to explore and find their new favorite Substacks. The most common response I received to my directory post was a lament that it has been very hard to find nature writing and art through Substack’s search functions.
I hope this will make it easier!
All content on HOME, our Substack Nature Directory, will always remain free.
My goal is simply to raise the profile of our community of nature-lovers and facilitate connection with people who want to receive what we share with the world.
As mentioned, I’ll typically post only once a month with new listings and other relevant updates, so joining this directory won’t add to your overstuffed-inbox woes.
Paid subscriptions are available, too, for any with the means and inclination to support the very long hours spent developing and maintaining this directory. That’s absolutely optional, however; HOME will remain open to all, regardless of ability to pay.
I hope you like it! Take a look, and artists and writers, be sure to get on top of this Google Form so I can list your work prior to the launch in May. :)
Have a lovely weekend and Earth Day on Monday!

So much appreciation for your efforts… and thank you for offering a model of how to do this. I am putting together a list of Buddhist inspired Substacks and will be referencing your approach.
This is amazing work Rebecca, thank you?
Maybe you can send your directory to Substack (I’m going to recommend you the next time is see the prompt pop up in Notes!) It just might urge them to add that Nature to there list of genres!
