Hi Rebecca! Glad you featured the Hansen paper and its reveal that global mean surface temps rose 0.4 degC over the past two years, so 0.2 degC annually, and, if this rate holds, we will see 1.95 (1.75 already) by the end of this year, 2.15 by the end of 2026, 2.35 by the end of 2027, 2.55 by the end of 2028, 2.75 by the end of 2029, 2.95 by the end of 2030. We are burning the surface of this planet and it may be unlivable by 2030, if we continue to burn 8 billion tons of coal annually, and 100+M barrels of oil daily. Like everything else coming out of the lying mouth of Our Mad King (wannabe) Donald, "drill, baby, drill" is insane, if anything is left of our nation after Tramp and his Muskrat get done destroying America. You can't make this shyte up. God help us!
‘Like’ feels like the wrong button to press, but I do appreciate your work, so we’ll assume that’s what I’m liking. Terrifying content. Thanks for the pinky finger analogy too. All the best from far-off Australia.
Rebecca, thank you for always speaking to power. Many are cowed and intimidated in this unprecedented attack on American democracy. Musk is a latter day Cromwell, none of us should underestimate him. Unlike Trump he is formidably able. His long term goals are known only to him. We have never seen his like. The destruction of USAID is so tragic and unnecessary and illegal. But the GOP has sunk to the lowest level I seen them descend to in my lifetime. They are cowed, aid and abettors, lickspittles, who now lack the spine to oppose someone who is clearly weakening the country. The courts are our last defence and I imagine you, Rebecca, are going to have a very busy four years ahead of you. For which we all owe you gratitude
"Many would say it’s past time for the American empire to fall like Rome once did. Fair enough, but how many other lives will that demise take along with it?" -- Yes this has been a perennial discussion, as you know. We don't wish for collapse because of the suffering it will bring, yet it's also true that the status quo brings so much suffering now, and for some suffering now, it's already a worst case scenario. It's a conundrum for sure.
Rebecca, this was hard to read, and I can only imagine the pain experienced in compiling it all. I'm also speaking for my kids, "a wide range of indigenous and nonindigenous human lives" and all members of plant and animal communities when I say Thank Your for the work you do.
Thank you, Rebecca. I especially appreciate the hand analogy for government spending and the partial list of environmental projects funded by USAID. Plus the reminder that Musk and his henchman (and they are mostly male) are doing with USAID is not legal. It's about dividing and conquering the opposition, and scaring the American people into submission. We can and will resist this.
Thank you Rebecca. You are creating such an important record in these posts and in the process informing so many of us what actually is behind the obscure names that have been used to designate such important parts of our Federal Government. I consider myself a pretty well informed citizen but in the last few weeks I have learned something new everyday about what important work has been underway.
Very sobering...as you say, this attack on USAID has nothing to do with saving money, attacking fraud or corruption. It is all part of the "destroy liberal democracy" playbook, well illustrated by the relatively recent actions by Viktor Orban in Hungary (and its close ties to the Republican Party and Project 2025). Its impact on numerous environmental projects is heartbreaking, and completely wrong-headed. Many of these cuts, if allowed to stand, will eventually come back to bite us. Thanks for the details.

Rebecca, thanks for ALL of this especially your mention of AMOC💧
I had no idea USAID also involved environmental projects. Thank you for enlightening us. This is just heartbreaking.

Thanks, as always, Rebecca. You're doing great and essential work.

I, too, didn't realize the extent of USAID's involvement in environmental projects. Thank you for posting this, Rebecca!
