I have heard some people use the term "free" rather than "wild." Nicholas Wilkinson has given a lot of thought to these questions. You might enjoy his site, Traps, Cages and Spells. https://nicholaswilkinson.substack.com/
In Australia people are trying to save feral donkeys. It turns out they help the landscape in numerous ways. Who would guess?
Very cool. Thanks for the rec to look at Nicholas Wilkinson’s work. Just subscribed over there!
I like “free.” I may also like “self-willed,” although maybe it’s a bit clunky? Maybe “independent”? I don’t like “unmanaged”, I don’t think. It’s pretty human-centric, and I am trying to break free, where possible, of language based in human supremacy.
The feral donkey point reminded me of something I read recently - there’s a bit of a back and forth at Rewilding Earth regarding where feral horses in the US might fit into ecological goals. Strong opinions on both sides, of course: https://open.substack.com/pub/georgewuerthner/p/no-to-feral-horses
Thanks for this, Rebecca.
